Two Quaker Meeting Signs
![]()
How many times have you heard this bemused comment:
"Quakers?? I thought they all died out."
Or how about--
"Quakers?? Aren't they Amish? Where's your horse and buggy?"
Such confusion is embarrassing, but all too understandable, in view of the fact that so many meetings are all but invisible, even in their own communities.
How bad does it get? Well, let's consider the following sign, which points to a meetinghouse not far from Philadelphia:
In the top photo, which was taken from only a few feet away, the sign is readable
enough.
But from across the street, where the bottom photo was taken, it is hardly noticeable; so
we've added a pointer to help locate it. Few persons driving past would even know it, or
the meeting, is there.
All too many meetinghouse signs are like this. When there are signs at all.

Fortunately, there are amazing exceptions to this unhappy pattern.
